About this board game
Crossing the Line: Aachen 1944 is an operational-level simulation for 1–2 players, with games lasting approximately 600 minutes. It recreates the Battle for Aachen from September 12 to October 21, 1944, as Lieutenant General Hodges leads the First Army toward the fortified Westwall.
The game places players in command of forces operating across a detailed map of the campaign area. A hex represents 1.2 kilometers of terrain, each turn covers two to eight days, and combat units are mostly battalions. The historical situation gives the Allied advance a larger objective: breaking through the fortified line, crossing the Roer River, and potentially reaching the Rhine River.
Crossing the Line: Aachen 1944 uses a semi-interactive system. Only one division belonging to the active player is activated at a time to conduct actions, while the inactive player may sometimes react to specific threats by interrupting the enemy’s actions with one of their own divisions.
- Designed for two players, with support for solitaire and team play
- Four scenarios accompanied by extensive historical notes
- Large-scale map covering the Aachen operation
- Divisional activations and conditional enemy reactions
- 2022 second-edition contents including a mounted map, 448 extra-large counters, player aids, setup and reinforcement displays, a solitaire play track sheet, and two 10-sided dice
The game’s components support a substantial historical study as well as a challenging tabletop contest. Reinforcements and withdrawals are managed through dedicated displays, while the scenario booklet provides multiple ways to explore the campaign.
Released in 2019, this deep historical wargame focuses on the operational decisions, timing, and changing pressures of the Aachen offensive rather than a short, abstract battle experience.
