About this expansion

Cyclades: Ancient Ruins is a 2016 promo for 2–5 players, with games lasting about 90 minutes. Sold with the Cyclades: Monuments expansion at Essen 2016, it adds two Ruins tokens and their corresponding Ruins cards.

At the end of the first offering phase, before actions are performed, the player who chose Apollo selects two different islands that no player controls and places one Ruins token on each. When playing with the Titans expansion, territories may be chosen instead. If multiple players chose Apollo, the player who receives the prosperity marker decides where the Ruins appear.

  • Two Ruins tokens
  • The corresponding Ruins cards
  • A random Monument card awarded when a Ruin is claimed

When a player takes control of an island containing a Ruins token, they randomly draw a Monument card from the unused Monuments set aside at the beginning of the game. The card is placed face up, with the card matching the Ruins token placed on top.

That player alone may build the revealed Monument, following the usual rules, but it can only be placed on the island containing the Ruins token. If another player conquers the island, they seize the card as well and may then build the Monument only on that island.

The Ruins remain relevant until their Monument is built. Once construction is complete, both the Ruins token and its corresponding card are removed from play. In Cyclades: Ancient Ruins, control of an unclaimed island can provide access to a powerful construction opportunity—but only while that island remains in your possession.
