About this board game

Dead of Winter: Tabletop Edition is a story-centric psychological survival game for 2–5 players, with games lasting about 120 minutes. Set in a harsh winter after most of humanity has died or become diseased, it places the group in a small, weakened colony surrounded by flesh-craving monsters.

Each player leads a faction of survivors, including dozens of different characters. Everyone works toward a shared victory condition, but each player must also complete a secret personal objective to win individually. These objectives may be harmless psychological quirks, dangerous obsessions, a desire to sabotage the main mission, or even vengeance against the colony.

This makes Dead of Winter a meta-cooperative experience: cooperation is essential, but the colony’s interests may not always match a player’s own goals. Some games can end with everyone winning, some with only certain players succeeding, and others with the entire group losing.

Across each game, survivors must confront outside threats while trying to keep the colony functioning. Players face difficult, heavily thematic decisions as they respond to crises, search for food and supplies, protect morale, and determine when personal priorities must give way to the group’s survival.

  • Players: 2–5
  • Play time: approximately 120 minutes
  • Core experience: shared objectives combined with secret personal goals
  • Setting: an apocalyptic world during a brutal winter

The Tabletop Edition features a variant box cover and includes the Felicia Day and Kodiak Colby promotional characters. With frequent, wildly varying choices and competing motivations, every session creates a tense survival story shaped by the decisions of the players.
