Defenders of the Realm: The Barbarian is a character expansion for 1–4 players, with an approximately 90-minute play time. Released in 2010, this preorder bonus consists of a Barbarian hero figure and its associated character card.

The Barbarian brings three distinctive abilities to the game. Battle Rage lets the Barbarian spend action points before an attack roll to modify the die. Each action point spent adds +1 to the die rolled, although this ability cannot be used when attacking a General.

Famed Warrior rewards a successful first attack against multiple enemies. If two or more enemies are defeated with that first attack in a location, remove one enemy minion from each adjacent location as they flee. Enemies in a location with a General do not flee.

• Battle Rage: Spend action points to increase an attack die result, except against a General.
• Famed Warrior: Cause enemy minions in adjacent locations to flee after defeating at least two enemies with the first attack in a location.
• Local Support: If the Barbarian ends a turn at an Inn or Black location, draw three Hero Cards, choose two, and discard one.
