About this expansion
Defenders of the Realm: The Dragon Expansion is an expansion for 1–6 players with a 90-minute play time, adding new threats, customization options, and campaign-style scoring to the battle against the darkness.
Three Dragon Generals join Sapphire: Onyx, Hemlock, and Brimstone. Each brings a distinctive minion type and a dangerous special ability. Sapphire also receives a new General card that gives her an additional hit point for each other Dragon in play, while the new Dragons can be mixed and matched with existing Generals.
- Onyx’s Zealots go berserk in combat, with survivors dealing a point of damage after each combat action.
- Hemlock’s Imps spread into adjacent spaces and can steal a random card from Heroes who remain with them.
- Brimstone’s Fire Elementals ignite areas when three gather, creating dangerous spaces that cost extra Actions to enter and wound Heroes who stay there.
The Generals themselves alter the flow of play. Brimstone moves whenever her card appears during Darkness Spreads, setting areas on fire, while players can lose cards when attacking Hemlock. Any new Dragon can also serve as an Agent of the Dark Lord when at least one original General is in play.
Adjust the difficulty with up to five Global Effects Cards, choosing from five Good and five Bad effects. Up to four Royal Blessing Tokens let players ignore a Darkness Spreads card, remove a taint crystal, or prevent a General from moving.
For a more personalized campaign, the King’s Champion Scoring Variant tracks major and minor feats, from taking on multiple minions to healing the land, extinguishing fires, completing quests, and defeating Generals. In Defenders of the Realm: The Dragon Expansion, the most famous Hero becomes the King’s Champion, while other top scorers earn titles and rewards for future games.
