About this board game

Detective Stories: History Edition – Kaifeng 982 is a historical criminal investigation game for 1–5 players, with an approximate play time of 150 minutes. Set against events dating to 982 AD, it follows a search for the truth behind the assassination of Chancellor Lai.

The discovery of a thousand-year-old ancient Chinese artifact sheds new light on the assassination, an event that changed the fate of the Xi Xia Empire forever. Professor Dan Silvers begins investigating the mystery, but alone in a foreign country, he reaches the limits of what he can uncover without help from afar.

Players assist the investigation by studying the available evidence and building their own understanding of the case. The game calls for investigative work similar to that carried out by archaeologists in real life: collecting clues, considering what they reveal, and using them to bring a long-buried truth to light.

  • Explore a historical criminal case rooted in events from 982 AD.
  • Investigate betrayal, insurgents, and the threat of a looming war.
  • Use collected evidence to develop your own investigation.
  • Uncover the story surrounding an ancient Chinese artifact and Chancellor Lai’s assassination.

As the first game in a series of detective games based on historical events, Detective Stories: History Edition – Kaifeng 982 combines historical subject matter with a focused mystery to solve. Its premise is designed to appeal not only to history enthusiasts, but also to players who enjoy piecing together evidence and pursuing an unanswered case.

Released in 2021, this investigation invites you to look beyond the surviving clues and question what happened in Kaifeng in 982. Can you help Professor Dan Silvers uncover the truth?
