About this board game
Downstream is a puzzly card-laying game for two players that plays in about 20 minutes. In each game, players build a growing river ecosystem while competing to enrich their own shoreline.
Players add cards to the developing river in one of two ways. A card can extend the flow of water, continuing the river and adding scoring features to either shore. Alternatively, it can be tucked to extend an existing bank, but this represents a missed opportunity to affect the flow of water.
This central choice gives every card placement a clear purpose. Extending the river can influence the developing ecosystem and create new scoring possibilities, while extending a bank changes the shoreline without shaping the river’s flow. Players must weigh these options as the shared river takes form.
- Two-player competition: Face one opponent in a focused strategic contest.
- Growing river ecosystem: Add cards to create an evolving river and its surrounding banks.
- Meaningful card placement: Extend the water flow or tuck cards to develop an existing shore.
- Changing objectives: Compete to achieve a varying set of goals in each game.
The objectives vary from game to game, so no two resulting rivers need to feel exactly alike. Each one develops its own personality as players choose how to direct the flow, build their banks, and pursue the available scoring opportunities.
With its compact play time and focused two-player format, Downstream offers a concise puzzle built around shared space, evolving shorelines, and carefully timed card placement. The river you create is both the playing area and the record of the decisions made throughout the game.
