About this board game
Enemy at the Gates is a high-complexity operational wargame for 1–4 players, covering the Eastern Front from 19 November 1942 to mid-March 1943. Playing time ranges from 4 to 100 hours, with BoardGameGeek listing a maximum duration of 6000 minutes.
This second Operational Combat Series release presents the pivotal campaigns around Stalingrad and southern Russia. Players face a dynamic, fluid situation in which Soviet and German forces must exploit their different strengths, make difficult operational choices, and decide when to stand, when to run, and when to strike.
The game covers Operation Uranus and the creation of the Stalingrad pocket, followed by the German relief and airlift efforts. The campaign continues through Operation Little Saturn, Operation Star, and Operation Gallup, including von Manstein’s famous “backhand blow.”
- Turn scale: half a week
- Map scale: 5 miles / 8 kilometers per hex
- Unit scale: battalion to army
- Four 22 × 34-inch maps plus an 8 × 11-inch Stalingrad blow-up map
- Eight dual-sided countersheets containing 2,800 half-inch counters
Enemy at the Gates includes the OCS rules, game-specific rules, charts and tables folders, player aid cards, and two six-sided dice. The Soviet army’s rearmed and reorganized Tank Corps provides a distinct challenge to German Panzer Divisions, requiring each side to fight differently to maximize its capabilities.
Extensively researched, playtested, and developed, the game is designed for players seeking more than a simplified account of these decisive events. It offers numerous one- and two-map scenarios, high solitaire suitability, and a system refined from player feedback on Guderian’s Blitzkrieg. All four maps were changed and reprinted in 2001; the game was later updated and replaced by Case Blue.
