About this board game

Evil High Priest is a worker-placement game for 2–5 players, with games lasting about 90 minutes. Each player becomes a priest serving the same Lovecraftian Great Old One, but none are allies: when the entity awakens, it appoints only the priest with the most victory points as High Priest.

Players take turns placing cultists during Action phases to activate sites across several boards. These locations allow priests to gather resources, summon monsters, shatter Elder Signs, and launch investigator raids that attack every player. When all cultists have been used, the Action phase ends and they are recovered for the next round.

  • Worker placement: Move cultists to sites on the town, ritual, cult, and personal boards.
  • Resource management: Recruit more cultists and collect resources while deciding when to pursue the end of the game.
  • Rival cults: Compete for victory points while facing investigator raids that threaten everyone.
  • Variable cult boards: Swap the cult board between games for different tactical challenges.

Every player manages an inner sanctum and a priest board representing their sect. The town board represents Lovecraft country, while the ritual board represents magical spells and the cult board represents the Great Old One awaiting release.

The game ends when the last Elder Sign blocking the Great Old One is shattered. Players then total their points, with different resources contributing different values and Elder Signs being the most valuable. Because the Cthulhu and Black Goat cult boards require different tactics and planning, Evil High Priest offers distinct experiences from one game to the next.
