About this board game

Expedition Sumatra is a jungle exploration board game for 2–4 players, with sessions lasting around 45 minutes. Players journey into the dense primeval forest of Sumatra in search of rare and nearly extinct animals.

At the heart of the game is a constantly changing landscape. By flipping and rotating path tiles, players create new routes through the jungle while old paths disappear. Every tile turned over brings uncertainty: it may reveal an animal, an empty path, or a native inhabitant ready to send hard-won animals back into the forest.

As expeditions move through the wilderness, players track down animals and load them onto ships that circle the island. The hunt is carried out on behalf of famous zoological gardens in the Western world, while the black market offers attractive prices and the inhabitants of Sumatra have their own say in what happens to the wildlife.

  • Build and reshape jungle routes by flipping and rotating path tiles.
  • Search the forest for rare animals hidden beneath the changing landscape.
  • Load captured animals onto ships circling the island.
  • Face the uncertainty of deserted paths and native inhabitants who may reclaim animals.

With its evolving board, hidden discoveries, and shifting paths, Expedition Sumatra makes every step into the jungle a fresh decision. The board’s appearance changes throughout the game, creating an expedition where the route ahead—and what lies beneath the next tile—can never be taken for granted.
