About this board game

Far East War 1592 is a 2–4-player historical strategy game with an approximately 120-minute play time, recreating the Imjin War between Japan and the China/Korea factions.

In 1592, Japanese Taikou Toyotomi Hideyoshi sought to conquer Ming China by marching through Joseon Korea. When Korea denied his proposal, Japan launched its invasion. Japanese forces advanced rapidly at first, capturing Hanseong and Pyongyang and driving the Korean king toward the Yalu River, where he appealed to Ming China for aid.

One side represents Japan, while the other represents China and Korea. Each faction aims to conquer the target provinces of its rivals. Victory goes to the side that captures the objectives of the campaign and becomes the final victor of the Far East War.

Players alternate moving around the action roundel, choosing when and how to carry out essential operations. Careful planning is vital, since the selected actions shape recruitment, command, movement, and combat throughout the conflict.

  • Recruit forces and manage available provisions.
  • Assign generals to lead armies.
  • March troops through the Korean peninsula.
  • Initiate battles for contested provinces.
  • Respond to unknown events that can affect the military situation.

Success depends on tactical movement, thoughtful troop and general assignments, and precise use of the action roundel. Battles also include an element of uncertainty through dice rolls, giving commanders both planning decisions and luck to contend with.

With its three-way historical setting and opposing factions, Far East War 1592 brings the vivid struggle of the Imjin War to the table, from Japan’s invasion to the intervention of Ming China.
