About this board game

Fibonachos is a card game for 2–5 players that blends Mexican cuisine, mathematics, and trick-taking gameplay in sessions of about 35 minutes.

Each round begins with a 51-card deck containing three suits, with 17 cards in each suit. Deal the cards as evenly as possible, then shuffle the separate spicy deck and reveal its top card. The lead player starts the trick, and every other player must follow suit whenever possible.

Fibonacci numbers provide the game’s most distinctive twist. If two fibonacho cards appear in a trick—cards numbered 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, or 13—those cards become trump for that trick. When trump is active, the player who played the highest fibonacho card claims the revealed spicy card. If trump is not activated, the highest card in the led suit wins it instead.

  • Reveal a spicy card before each trick.
  • Follow suit when possible.
  • Activate fibonacho trump when two qualifying cards are played.
  • Have the trick winner reveal the next spicy card and lead the next trick.

After all tricks are complete, count the spicy points you collected. If your total equals a Fibonacci number—1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, or 21—you score the next Fibonacci number rather than your actual total. Remarkably, collecting no spicy cards earns 34 points.

With its combination of tactical card play, changing trump conditions, and unusual scoring goals, Fibonachos rewards careful decisions throughout each round. After three rounds, the player with the most points wins.
