About this board game

Final Fantasy VIII: Triple Triad is a two-player card game played on a 3×3 grid, with matches taking about five minutes. Based on the sub game from Final Fantasy VIII, it challenges players to capture the most cards by comparing numbers on adjacent sides.

Each player secretly holds five cards and chooses a color, while the first player is determined randomly. On a turn, place one card on an open space. Every card features a four-sided compass rose with values from 1 to 9, plus A for 10. If your number is higher than the opposing number directly beside it, the opponent’s card is flipped to your color.

Captures can create powerful chains: when a card is flipped, it may cause other cards to change color as well. Each card is flipped only once per turn, giving clever placements the potential to reshape the grid quickly. Some cards also show an elemental symbol, providing a +1 bonus against cards without that element.

  • Two players compete for control of a 3×3 grid.
  • Each player uses five hidden cards.
  • Cards feature characters and monsters from Final Fantasy VIII.
  • Card levels include monsters, guardian forces, and player characters.
  • Higher-level cards contain higher numbers.

Cards are double-sided, with one pink side and one blue side, and players select which color they represent. The physical release was sold in Japan in boosters containing 10 cards: five game cards and five visual art cards. No modifications were made to the game itself.

In Final Fantasy VIII, winning could allow a player to take one of the opponent’s played cards, although house rules for this style of play vary. Internet play has also been fan-made, extending this compact tactical contest beyond the original physical format.
