About this board game

Florenza is a Renaissance-era board game for 2–5 players, with an approximate play time of 120 minutes. Each player leads one of the most powerful families in Florenza, striving to become the era’s most famous patron of the arts.

Players hire celebrated artists and commission artworks in their own district, the Cathedral, or the city’s civic buildings. Every artwork requires money and resources, so careful planning is essential as players seek to support masterpieces and earn prestige points.

To provide the resources artists need, players send workers to labor in a variety of workshops. Workers may even be placed in opponents’ districts, while offering charity to the church can provide additional workers. Completing artworks is the primary way to gain prestige, although prestige can also be spent during the game; at its end, it becomes the main source of victory points.

  • Commission artworks in personal, religious, and civic locations.
  • Assign workers to workshops to generate money and resources.
  • Hire famous artists and finance their works.
  • Earn, spend, and ultimately score prestige points.

Florenza draws its historical character from real Renaissance Italy. The game’s characters are real historical figures, while its buildings and workshops were real Renaissance workplaces. The available artworks include masterpieces associated with some of the world’s most famous artists.

The names of buildings, Cathedral sections, and workshops retain their Italian forms from the period, reflecting the language and culture of the setting. Released in 2010, Florenza combines artistic patronage, worker placement, and historical atmosphere in a richly themed journey through Renaissance Florence.
