About this board game

Formula Dé is a fast-paced racing game for 2–10 players, with races lasting around 120 minutes. Players compete to complete the circuit while managing speed, choosing gears, and carefully judging every corner.

Each gear permits a different range of movement, but the precise distance is determined randomly. That uncertainty makes every turn meaningful: accelerating can create a valuable lead, while entering a curve too quickly may leave you struggling to meet its speed requirements.

The central challenge is that cars must end a certain number of turns in each curve of the racetrack. Players therefore need to regulate their speed and plan their progress through the circuit rather than simply move as far as possible each turn.

  • Gear selection: Choose the gear that best balances speed and control.
  • Random movement: Each gear offers a movement range, while the exact result remains uncertain.
  • Corner management: Respect the required number of turns in each curve to keep the race on track.
  • Large-group racing: Supports up to ten players for a lively competitive experience.

Released in 1997, Formula Dé was a winner of the 1990 Concours International de Créateurs de Jeux de Société. Its extensive circuit history includes tracks such as Monaco, Monza, Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps, Suzuka, Interlagos, and many others.

The game was expanded through numerous circuit releases from Ludodélire, Descartes Editeur, and asmodee, including additional tracks and the Formula D: The Shortcut expansion. It was also re-implemented by Formula Dé Mini and Formula D, giving racing fans several ways to experience its gear-based competition.
