About this board game

Four Battles of Army Group South is a two-player regimental- and divisional-level wargame set with a playing time of about 240 minutes. Released in 1979, it contains four completely separate simulations of major Eastern Front battles.

Each game uses the shared Army Group South Standard Rules, derived from Panzergruppe Guderian, and adds its own exclusive rules. This structure lets players learn a common rules core while exploring four distinct campaigns and operational situations.

  • Kiev: The Battle of Encirclement, 1941, covering the German Blitzkrieg from 29 August to 26 September, with two days per turn and five miles per hex.
  • Rostov: The First Soviet Counter-Attack, 1941, portraying the drive across the Donets Basin and the German strategic setback around Rostov.
  • Operation Star: The Soviet Winter Offensive, 1943, featuring the Soviet advance toward Kharkov and the German counterattack led by von Manstein’s Panzer reserves.
  • Korsun: The German Pocket on the Dniepr, 1944, depicting the Korsun, or Cherkassy, Pocket and the attempted German breakout.

The four scenarios use different scales, ranging from two to five days per turn and from 4.6 to 10.5 miles per hex. Together, they cover encirclement, counterattack, winter offensives, and pocket warfare.

The set includes four maps, 800 half-inch counters, standard and game-specific rulebooks, charts and tables, a historical background booklet, and one six-sided die. With medium complexity and high solitaire playability, Four Battles of Army Group South offers a focused collection of operational World War II simulations.
