About this board game

Framework is a tile-laying game for 1–4 players, played in about 30 minutes, in which players build connected displays and race to complete tasks.

The game includes 120 tiles, and each player starts with 22 tokens. On every turn, the lead player draws and reveals one more tile than the number of players. Each player selects one tile in turn, but the lead player must take the final tile.

Place your chosen tile adjacent to at least one other tile in your display, then check whether you have completed any tasks. Whenever you complete a task, cover it with one of your tokens. The first player to place all of their tokens wins.

Tiles feature zero to three frames and zero to three tasks, with both frames and tasks appearing in four colors. A task might require a green set of three: the tile showing that task must belong to a group of three tiles with green frames, connected directly or through an orthogonal chain of tiles with green frames.

  • Some tasks accept either of two colors, such as red or brown.
  • Other tasks offer alternative requirements, such as four yellow or four brown frames.
  • Conditional tasks require you to complete one task before completing the next.

Every tile choice affects both your growing layout and the tasks still waiting to be covered. In Framework, connecting the right colors while taking useful tiles from the shared selection is the key to placing all your tokens first.

A solo game is also included. In it, you attempt to place all of your tokens in a tile area that is as close as possible to a 5×5 grid.
