About this board game

Freshwater Fly is a dice-drafting and set-collection game for 1–4 players, with an approximate play time of 90 minutes. Set in a rushing mountain stream, it challenges anglers to catch fish, collect flies, and earn valuable achievement points.

Each turn, examine the changing hatch and tie a fly that matches your target fish at the right time and place along the river. You can cast upstream to drift your fly with the current and gain extra bites, or attempt a pinpointed cast for a potentially perfect catch.

Thoughtful positioning matters. Casting near rocks can improve your skill and reveal new fishing techniques, while your supply of finesse helps you handle future challenges. Once a fish is hooked, the physically spinning rondel reel offers different bonuses as you draw in your line, depending on how aggressively you fight.

  • Select one die from the pool and assign it to the fishing maneuver you want to perform.
  • Use higher-valued dice for stronger actions, or build lower totals to earn free turns.
  • Unlock or multiply bonus actions to solve demanding fishing puzzles in creative ways.

Collecting sets of fish and flies contributes to both personal and common goals. The key is to pursue goals that overlap in the most rewarding ways without falling behind on your total fish count.

Freshwater Fly ends when one player catches a seventh fish. After achievement points are awarded, the angler with the highest score wins.
