About this board game
Fury at Midway is a 1–2 player game of air operations set during the Battle of Midway, with play taking about 120 minutes. Its central challenge is deciding when to launch an air strike and which aircraft to commit while protecting your own fleet and objectives.
The game uses two maps, one for each player, creating increased hidden information about air strikes, damage, and combat air patrol. This uncertainty makes planning and defense especially important as both sides attempt to turn their aircraft into a decisive advantage.
For the Japanese player, victory requires taking Midway or winning the carrier battle. This gives Japan two objectives to pursue and demands a carefully considered plan. The American position is more straightforward, but American forces are less well trained, and mistakes involving navigation, strike coordination, escort, and related operations can have serious consequences.
- Air-focused gameplay: Choose when to strike and which planes to use.
- Hidden information: Track uncertainty surrounding strikes, damage, and combat air patrol.
- Distinct objectives: Japan must capture Midway or prevail in the carrier battle.
- Abstracted surface forces: Surface units appear through anti-aircraft fire, bombardment, and a small chance of a night surface battle.
This Revolution Games edition of Fury at Midway expands the maps, revises the counter art, adds four event cards, reduces anti-aircraft fire, and introduces rules for hitting the wrong carrier force. These changes build on the game’s original Japanese publication, Midway: Turning the Tide in the Pacific.
Designed as a simple but highly accurate treatment of Midway, the game focuses attention on the air war and the consequences of imperfect information. Every strike, escort decision, and defensive choice can shape the battle.
