About this board game

Fury in the West is a two-player historical wargame of the Battle of Shiloh, fought on April 6 and 7, 1862. With an approximately 180-minute playing time, it recreates the struggle between the Union Army of the Tennessee and the Confederate forces in western Tennessee.

The battle begins at dawn, as more than 40,000 Confederate soldiers launch a sudden attack against Union troops near a small frontier church. One player takes the role of General A. S. Johnston, seeking to drive the Union forces from Southern soil, while the other commands as U.S. Grant, attempting to rally the army and halt the Confederate onslaught.

Players maneuver colorful counters across an attractive five-color mapboard measuring 22 by 28 inches. The rules cover important battlefield considerations including leadership, bayonet charges, gunboats, long-range artillery, formations, and facing.

  • A historically researched recreation of Shiloh
  • Over 230 extra-thick, die-cut counters representing the opposing armies
  • An innovative system for recording casualties and stragglers for individual units
  • A fast-moving, playtested system designed for an exciting and balanced game

Fury in the West was designed to enable players to refight and study one of the least understood battles of the American Civil War. Its emphasis on historical accuracy extends to the details of the opposing forces and the battlefield rules.

The Battleline edition contains 255 counters, including 10 blanks, while the Avalon Hill edition contains 234 counters with none blank. Released in 1977, this game offers a focused contest over the fate of the American Civil War’s western theater.
