About this board game

Gekitai is a two-player abstract strategy game played in about 20 minutes on a 6×6 grid. Each player has eight colored markers and takes turns placing them on any open space.

Every placement can reshape the board. When a marker is placed, it pushes adjacent pieces outward by one space if there is an open space for them to move into—or if they can be pushed off the board. Any piece pushed off the board is returned to its owner.

The pushing rule creates a precise tactical challenge. If there is no open space on the opposite side of a piece, that piece is not pushed. A newly played marker also cannot push two or more other pieces lined up behind one another.

After the pushing is complete, check whether the move has produced a winning position. In Gekitai, both forming a line and successfully placing all your markers can end the game.

  • Make three in a row: Line up three markers of your color at the end of your turn.
  • Occupy the board: Have all eight of your markers on the board after pushing.

Because pieces may be displaced, returned to their owners, or used to open and close spaces, each turn combines placement with direct board manipulation. Players must consider the immediate effect of a move as well as the changing positions of every adjacent piece.

With its small grid, limited supply of markers, and clear victory conditions, Gekitai offers a focused contest of positioning and timing. Place carefully, use the push effect, and try to create the decisive advantage before your opponent does.
