About this expansion
Gentes: New Cities is a 2017 board game for 2–4 players with an approximately 120-minute play time. It introduces new city and hometown tiles, additional bonus point tiles, and a new way to determine the starting player.
During setup, the new starting player action tile replaces its counterpart from the standard game. The eight new bonus point tiles are sorted by kind and placed in four stacks beside the original bonus point tiles; in a two-player game, only one tile of each kind is used.
The ten city tokens, consisting of six cities and four hometowns, are randomized by dropping them onto the table so that each shows a random side. Beginning with the starting player and continuing clockwise, players place these tiles on city squares until each player has selected two, following the applicable placement rules.
- New starting player: The player immediately gains 1 victory point and becomes the new starting player in the decline phase following the heyday phase.
- Bonus points: Meeting a tile’s requirements lets a player take it face down. During each decline phase, it provides 1 victory point; once the second tile of a kind is taken, later players cannot receive one for meeting those conditions.
- Hometowns: After building a hometown, its new actions become available in the heyday phase beginning on the next player’s turn. They may be used only on the owner’s turn and only once per turn.
With its randomized city choices and new scoring opportunities, Gentes: New Cities gives players additional decisions to consider while developing their position and competing for victory points.
