About this board game

Gettysburg: July 1-3, 1863 is a 2024 Civil War wargame for 2 or more players, featuring scenarios that take 1–3 hours to play and a full battle lasting 6–10 hours.

As Volume IV in the Old School Wargames Civil War Brigade Battle series, the game recreates the historic and pivotal Battle of Gettysburg with a large mounted map board, oversized pieces, and a streamlined series ruleset of just 8–12 pages. Its high solitaire playability also supports solo engagement with the battle.

The game includes seven scenarios covering different moments and tactical questions from the campaign:

  • July 1: Meeting Engagement and Take That Hill, asking whether Ewell can take Culp’s Hill
  • July 2: The Fight for the Flanks and The Fight for Little Round Top
  • July 3: Lee’s Folly
  • July 4: Should Meade Have Attacked?
  • July 1–4: the full battle

Special rules cover the early or late arrival of reinforcements, follow-up attacks, multi-level hex changes, and a new rout rule. The game operates at a scale of one hour per turn and 200–250 yards per hex, with infantry and cavalry brigades and artillery battalions represented on the map.

Gettysburg: July 1-3, 1863 includes two mounted map boards that combine into a 34×44-inch playing surface, 540 counters, battle and play aids, order of battle charts, reinforcement and casualty charts, combat and terrain charts, two 10-sided dice, and a counter tray.
