About this board game

Ghost Chase is a 60-minute hidden-movement game for 2–5 players, released in 2001. One player becomes Max, the ghost, while the others take the roles of ghost chasers searching Canterville castle.

At the beginning of the game, Max and the chasers choose their starting rooms. Everyone then moves from room to room, but Max travels invisibly and reveals himself only at certain moments. The creatures living around the castle determine when that reveal must happen.

After each round, one animal is removed from the board. When all animals of one type have been removed, Max must identify his current room and explain how he reached it. This gives the chasers important opportunities to follow his trail and narrow the search.

  • Max’s code of honor: He may not enter the same room twice during the chase.
  • Chaser freedom: The ghost chasers may enter rooms as often as they like.
  • Changing pressure: Removing animals brings the next required reveal closer.
  • Two possible outcomes: The chasers catch Max, or Max survives until the last animal is removed.

The chasers work to force Max into a dead end and catch him by entering the room where he is. Their repeated access to rooms contrasts with Max’s restricted route, creating a race between pursuit and escape.

If any chaser enters Max’s room, all the chasers win. If the last animal leaves the board without Max being found, the player controlling Max wins. In Ghost Chase, every reveal can change the hunt as the castle closes in around its elusive ghost.
