About this board game

GigaWatt is a 1–6 player board game about transforming regional electricity production, with games lasting around 120 minutes. Set in Europe at the end of the 20th century, it asks which region can achieve sustainable electricity production first.

Each round, the fate of the dice increases electricity demand in your region. You must build power stations that produce the required gigawatts, generating the income needed to close old fossil-fuel plants and replace them with sustainable power stations that emit no CO2.

Keeping supply and demand in balance is central to the challenge. You can trade gigawatt surpluses and shortages with other players or with External Markets, but every choice carries risk. Move toward sustainability quickly and you may face shortages; proceed more carefully and another region may reach the finish first.

  • Build power stations to meet rising electricity demand.
  • Earn income and replace fossil gas and coal-fired plants.
  • Trade gigawatt surpluses or shortages with players and External Markets.
  • Manage the uncertainty of wind and solar power, which may sometimes produce only half their peak output.

To win GigaWatt, your region must be the first to produce more gigawatts than its demand while closing all of its fossil power plants. The result is a race between investment, reliability, and the urgent shift to sustainable electricity.
