About this board game

Great Medieval Battles: Four Battles from the Middle Ages is a two-player wargame released in 1979, with an approximate playing time of 240 minutes. It presents four separate simulations of medieval conflict, each played on its own map.

The battles span legend and history. King Arthur recreates the mythical struggle between King Arthur, leader of the Knights of the Round Table, and his evil son Modred. Robert at Bannockburn focuses on Robert the Bruce’s fight for Scottish independence in 1314.

The collection continues with The Black Prince, depicting the 1367 battle for the throne of Castille, and Tamburlaine, which pits the Ottoman Turks of Sultan Bayazid against Tamburlaine’s Tartar and Mongol hordes in 1402. Together, these scenarios cover a fascinating range of medieval warfare.

  • Four separate 22 × 17-inch battle maps
  • 380 cardboard playing pieces and various play aids
  • Detailed rules and a historical article
  • Troop counters ranging from unarmoured levy troops to plate-mailed heavy cavalry

The game includes both single- and double-sized counters representing the different troop types. Counter symbols identify swords, bows, and pikes, giving the armies a distinctive visual design.

Great Medieval Battles uses a combat system centered entirely on morale. Rather than relying on a separate damage model, players seek to break an enemy counter’s remaining morale, forcing it off the board or destroying it completely. With four included battles, detailed presentation, and striking SPI cover art, this is a complete medieval battle collection.
