About this board game

Guerrilla Checkers is a two-player board game that combines Checkers and Go in an approximately 30-minute contest of contrasting movement and capture methods.

The Guerrilla player uses small Go stones, placing and playing them on the intersection points of the checkerboard squares. Their objective is to surround and capture the opposing pieces.

The Counterinsurgent player uses checkers, moving on the checkerboard squares rather than the intersections. This side captures the enemy by jumping, creating a distinct system that contrasts with the Guerrilla player’s surrounding approach.

Because the two sides use different kinds of pieces and occupy different parts of the board, Guerrilla Checkers presents a clear hybrid design. One player works with small stones on the grid’s intersection points, while the other maneuvers larger pieces across the squares.

  • Players: 2
  • Play time: approximately 30 minutes
  • Board: a checkerboard or 8×8 grid
  • Required pieces: six checkers or large pieces, plus 66 small pieces distinct from them

The small pieces can be buttons, glass beads, small Go stones, or other suitable items, while the larger pieces serve as the checkers. This makes the required equipment straightforward to assemble with a checkerboard or equivalent 8×8 grid.

Released in 2010, Guerrilla Checkers offers a compact two-player experience built around the interaction between surrounding and jumping. Its unusual combination of Checkers-style movement and Go-style stones gives each side a separate way to contest the same board.
