About this board game

Guilford is a regimental-scale historical battle game for 1–2 players, with a listed play time of 180 minutes. It covers the Battles of Guilford Courthouse and Eutaw Springs in 1781, during the American Revolution.

As Volume III in GMT’s Battles of the American Revolution Series, Guilford includes a two-sided mapsheet, a sheet of 5/8-inch counters, a series rule book, a battle book, aids for previous games in the series, baggies, and dice. The map uses 200-yard hexes, while each turn represents one hour.

  • Random player order replaces a fixed “I go, you go” sequence, adding variability to play.
  • An Army Morale Track measures the opposing forces’ tenacity and will to fight.
  • American and German rifle units, along with American Partisans, bring special capabilities to the battlefield.
  • Eight tactics chits provide close-combat modifiers, subject to use restrictions.
  • Combat results include pinned units, captures, and step reductions.

Low counter density—particularly at Guilford—provides room for early maneuver. Victory can be decisive, substantial, or marginal, with requirements designed to compel the armies to fight rather than simply accept a draw.

The game provides both historical and campaign scenarios for each battle, supported by unique game and scenario rules. Leaders include Greene, Cornwallis, and Tarleton at Guilford Courthouse, and Greene, Marion, and Majoribanks at Eutaw Springs.

Guilford also contains replacement counters for Saratoga and Brandywine. Errata counters and a minor rule change are included in C3i #27 from 2013.
