About this board game
Hangtown is a Gold Rush-era strategy board game for 2–6 players, with games lasting about 90 minutes. Players become Pioneers competing for riches, resources, property, and prestige in the historic California community also known as Old Hangtown.
Each turn, players secretly select a card that determines when their Pioneer will act. They reveal their choices simultaneously, place their Pioneers at the corresponding yield sites, and resolve the phases in numeric order. The number of Pioneers at each site determines whether its result is a profitable Boom or a disappointing Bust.
Hangtown combines familiar ideas with streamlined twists on tableau building, worker placement, simultaneous action selection, variable turn order, and resource and hand management. Players place and activate workers, collect resources, and add historic buildings, districts, and monuments to their face-up tableaus. Every card built provides new abilities as well as Victory Points for final scoring.
- Balance personal optimization with clever guesses about the other players.
- Use the Boom-or-Bust system to get ahead while rivals receive less.
- Manage the advancing Outlaw, which locks yield sites into Bust outcomes.
- Prepare for the Final Shootout by positioning gunmen on Main Street.
When the Outlaw reaches the final section of the board, everyone must defend against the attack. Defeating the Outlaw earns additional Victory Points, while failure sends lost gunmen to Union Cemetery.
Historic locations and events, including the Bell Tower, Soda Works, Studebaker Wheelbarrow Shop, Wagon Train, and Mother Lode, bring Placerville’s story into the game. Discovery and Highgrade modes support newcomers and experienced players, while an expansion adds bidding for roles such as the Robber, Deputy, Prospector, and Gunslinger. With multiple paths to victory, Hangtown offers substantial replayability.
