About this board game

Hexpanse is a fast, hexagon-based tactical board game for 2–4 players, with games lasting about 60 minutes. Players take the roles of interstellar commanders and warlords battling for control of different planets.

There are two paths to victory. Defeat your opponent’s commander or commanders, or build the nine-unit pattern selected randomly from the pattern deck at the beginning of the game. This unique formation gives players an alternative objective to pursue while competing across the planet board.

Players primarily use their own soldiers, but they may also deploy characters and special ally faction units on the planet surface. Special action cards can provide more units, speed, wealth, or firepower, adding further options as the battle develops.

Each turn follows a clear sequence. First, wealth grows according to influence. The active player then selects two actions from a broad range of possibilities:

  • Place a unit or character on the planet board
  • Recall a unit from the planet board
  • Return one of your units from the waste
  • Attack with a unit or character
  • Increase wealth or influence
  • Move the commander to an adjacent place by paying a heal point
  • Use the commander’s skill by paying a heal point
  • Heal the commander by 1

After taking two actions, the player buys cards from the market, then the market is replenished to five cards. With its combination of positioning, resource growth, commander abilities, combat, and pattern-building, Hexpanse presents multiple ways to pressure opponents and pursue victory.
