About this board game
Hispania is a cooperative board game for 1–4 players, with games lasting about 60 minutes. In the cooperative game, 1 to 3 players take the roles of the praetors and consuls Rome sent to Hispania over almost 200 years.
Set at the beginning of the 2nd century BC, the game follows Rome’s campaign after the defeat of Carthaginian Hannibal. Rome has annexed Carthaginian possessions along Hispania’s Mediterranean coast and organized them into the provinces of Ulterior and Citerior. Its next objective is to complete the conquest of the peninsula, but the independent Hispaniard peoples prove to be a formidable enemy.
The game’s core engine is built on that of Tetrarchia, while introducing important changes to reflect the Roman campaign in Hispania. Among these are Roman coins and roads, which form part of the game’s distinctive systems and decisions.
- Cooperative play for 1–3 players
- A competitive mode for an additional player to lead the Hispanic resistance
- Modular expansions and historical scenarios
- 243 different levels created by its difficulty matrix
Players guide Rome through a long historical struggle that ultimately reaches the reign of Caesar Augustus, when the final defeat of the Cantabrians completes the incorporation of Hispania into the new Empire. The competitive mode changes the perspective by allowing one player to oppose Rome directly as the Hispanic resistance.
With its historical setting, variable challenge, and multiple ways to play, Hispania presents Rome’s conquest as a demanding campaign shaped by cooperation, resistance, and nearly two centuries of conflict.
