About this board game

Holy Roman Empire is a political and military wargame for 2–6 players, with games lasting approximately 240 minutes. Set during the Thirty Years War of 1618–1648, it portrays the conflict that plunged Germany and Europe into one of the longest and most destructive wars.

Players control the major powers of the era as they compete to determine who will wear the crown of the Holy Roman Empire and control Germany. Military force is only part of the struggle: players field armies, build navies, and engage in diplomatic intrigue, bribery, and treachery.

The game represents six powers from the period:

  • Austria
  • Palatinat
  • Bavaria
  • Sweden
  • Spain
  • France

Its central Europe setting is presented on a 17 x 22 area map, providing the game board for the political and military contest. Two card sheets supply a total of 36 state cards, while 260 counters support the game’s forces and other elements.

Released in 1984, Holy Roman Empire focuses on the shifting balance among the era’s major powers. With its combination of armies, navies, diplomacy, bribery, and treachery, it offers a lengthy tabletop depiction of the Thirty Years War and the fight for control of Germany.
