About this board game
Iberian Gauge is a railroad investment and track-building board game for 3–5 players, with a playing time of about 90 minutes. Released in 2017, it places players in the rugged mountains of the Iberian Peninsula as the age of the railroad arrives.
During Stock Rounds, players invest in railroad companies. The shares they acquire matter later: in the Operating Rounds, each share of stock allows its shareholder to build track for that company.
Construction takes place in the order that shares were purchased, creating a direct link between investment and railroad expansion. However, the hostile terrain makes every new section of track expensive, so companies must find ways to grow without exhausting their resources.
One important way to control costs is leasing track from other companies. Leasing reduces the expense of building and helps railroads continue expanding across the difficult landscape. Choosing when and how to use this option is central to keeping a company moving forward.
Expansion is not optional for long. A failure to expand can cause a company’s stock values to sink, potentially leading its investors to ruin. In Iberian Gauge, every investment connects to the struggle for new track, and the difficult terrain makes the race for growth especially costly.
