About this board game
Il Vecchio is a strategy board game for 2–4 players, playable in about 60 minutes, set in 15th-century Tuscany. Each player leads a Florentine family seeking power while Cosimo de Medici and his family rule the region from Florence.
Send family members across Tuscany to recruit followers such as knights, assassins, and abbots, collect money, and gain the favors needed to secure official positions in Florence. These resources help you take control of provinces in neighboring regions, earning power and bonus actions.
Timing and movement are central to the game. Location-specific tasks require both an available middleman and one of your own standing family members at the location, while middlemen constantly travel across Tuscany. Before taking an action, you may pay money to move one of your family members, helping you reach the right place at the right time.
- Perform location-specific actions to gather resources and influence.
- Spend followers and money to take over provinces.
- Travel to Florence to use scrolls and possibly money for city council or nobility tiles.
- Introduce new family members or raise all your lying members.
Every player begins with four family members in Tuscany and takes exactly one action per turn. After performing a location-specific action, the participating family member becomes inactive, creating an ongoing need to manage your available workforce.
The game ends when the Power of the Medici fades and the diminishing pile of crest tiles is exhausted. Players then total power points from gained tiles and majorities in the regions and Florence. In Il Vecchio, the family with the most power claims victory.
