About this board game
Imperial Elegy: The Road to the Great War 1850-1920 is a strategic, multiplayer card-driven board wargame for 1–6 players, with a playing time of up to 600 minutes. It blends diplomacy, warfare, colonization, and statecraft across a turbulent era of imperial competition.
Players take control of one of six major powers: Germany/Prussia, the United Kingdom, France, Austria/Austria-Hungary, Russia, or the Ottoman Empire. The game is designed primarily for six players, while also supporting smaller groups and solitaire play.
The main game unfolds over seven turns, with each turn representing a decade. During numerous player impulses, participants play action cards for Command Points or events. These cards can be used to colonize, conduct diplomacy, fight wars, and hinder opposing powers.
- Control one of six distinctive major powers.
- Use action cards for Command Points or historical events.
- Combine diplomacy, warfare, colonization, and statecraft.
- Play across seven decade-long turns, with a possible Great War extension.
A turn ends when all players consecutively pass or when everyone is out of cards. Italy is not directly controlled by a player if it unifies; instead, it interacts with the game through special rules.
Players can pursue victory by fulfilling their individual National Goals and scoring Victory Points. If the Great War occurs, the victory conditions change, and the game may continue for up to six additional, shorter Great War turns. A game can also end in an Auto-Victory if a player controls a specified number of territorial keys.
With its long strategic arc and shifting victory conditions, Imperial Elegy challenges players to manage national ambitions while responding to the changing balance of power.
