About this expansion

Innovation: Echoes of the Past is an expansion for the civilization-style card game Innovation, supporting 2–5 players in about 60 minutes. Released in 2011, it adds 110 entirely new cards while preserving the original game’s focus on building power through the ages.

The expansion includes 105 cards divided among age decks 1 through 10, plus five special achievement cards. Players begin with lower-powered technologies, then acquire increasingly powerful cards and stack them on earlier ones. By melding cards, scoring points, and using unique dogma actions, players work toward claiming enough achievements to win.

Echoes of the Past changes how cards enter the game. Each age now has two draw decks: the original Base cards and the new Echoes cards. Which deck players draw from depends on the contents of their hand, adding another layer to the decisions surrounding card acquisition.

  • Foreshadow: Stash a card beneath your player board, then bring it into play on a later turn when you meld a card from the same age or a higher age.
  • Echo: When you take a card’s dogma action, you can also receive additional actions shown on that card and on other cards visible in the same stack.
  • Expanded play: The expansion raises the maximum player count to five.

These mechanisms give the new cards distinctive ways to influence your tableau and timing. Innovation: Echoes of the Past mirrors the structure of the original game while introducing new card pools, delayed plays, and additional actions to explore.
