About this expansion

Battles For the Shenandoah: A Death Valley Expansion is a historical battle game for 1–2 players, featuring four battle games and multiple scenarios set in the Shenandoah campaigns of 1862 through 1864.

The expansion covers McDowell on May 8, 1862; 2nd Winchester on June 13, 14, and 15, 1863; Piedmont on June 5, 1864; and Cool Spring on July 18, 1864. Experienced players can play many scenarios in a single sitting.

Across these engagements, the game reflects the development of cavalry and the changes in infantry and artillery organization and tactics over the period. Each turn represents one hour, while each map hex covers 145 yards and includes 25-foot or 50-foot elevations.

  • Unit scale: 50 men or 1 cannon per strength point
  • Maps: two 17" × 22" double-sided maps, two 11" × 17" double-sided maps, and one 8½" × 11" map
  • Components: 560 counters, a battle booklet, eight Activation and Turn Record charts, a Terrain Effects Chart, and a Range Effects Chart

Battles For the Shenandoah uses additional materials from GMT’s Death Valley: Battles for the Shenandoah, including Player Aid Cards, the 2nd Disorder Chart, game markers, four maps, and a ten-sided die. The GBACW Series Rules are available from GMT’s website.

With multiple dated battles, varied map scales, and a design that tracks changing battlefield organization and tactics, Battles For the Shenandoah offers a focused set of Shenandoah engagements within the Death Valley system.
