About this board game

Iwo Jima: Rage Against the Marines is a two-player simulation of the fighting on Iwo Jima from February 17 to March 14, 1945, with an approximate playing time of 120 minutes.

Included in Operations Special Magazine Issue #1, the game presents the battle across nine turns. American units represent regiments, while Japanese units represent approximately 1,000 men, creating different scales of representation for the opposing forces.

Each turn follows a structured sequence with four main phases: Weather, US Phases, Japanese Phases, and the End Phase. The US portion contains seven phases, while the Japanese portion contains five, giving the game a clearly defined rhythm from turn to turn.

  • Rules booklet spanning eight pages
  • Half-counter sheet containing 88 counters measuring 5/8 inch
  • Game map for the main action
  • Mini-map for hidden Japanese movement
  • Screen to prevent prying American eyes

The rules are organized according to the sequence of play, helping players follow the turn structure as the simulation unfolds. An additional page covers special rules, scoring, and the conditions for victory.

With its compact presentation and focused historical scope, Iwo Jima: Rage Against the Marines recreates a specific period of the island fighting in a self-contained format. The 2008 release reimplements The battle for Iwo-jima, first published in Game Journal #16.
