About this board game

Jackson at the Crossroads: Cross Keys & Port Republic, June 8-9, 1862 is a Civil War battle simulation for 1-2 players, with an approximate play time of 240 minutes. It recreates the two battles fought in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley on June 8 and 9, 1862.

Pursued by two Union forces, Jackson must stand and fight before his opponents can effect a junction. At Cross Keys, General Fremont’s attack is easily repulsed; at Port Republic, bitter fighting leads to the rout of General Shields’ lead brigades. Together, these battles seal the fate of the Union campaign in the Valley and allow Jackson to leave the area and join Lee in the defense of Richmond.

The map represents the battlefield at a detailed tactical scale: each hex covers 210 yards of real terrain from side to side. A game-turn represents 45 minutes during the day or six hours during the night. Infantry and cavalry regiments, along with sections of artillery, maneuver across the map, while each strength point represents 100 men or one cannon.

As Volume 5 of the Great Battles of the American Civil War series, Jackson at the Crossroads uses the series’ standard rules for the central elements of combat and command.

  • Melee attacks, small-arms fire, and artillery fire
  • Cavalry charges and the effects of leadership
  • Exclusive rules covering the distinctive features of each battle

The game includes 400 counters, a 22-by-34-inch map, and a 16-page booklet of exclusive rules and historical material about the events. Jackson at the Crossroads was published with The Battle of Corinth: Standoff at the Tennessee, October 3-4, 1862.
