About this board game

Kartini: From Darkness to Light is a board game for 1–6 players, with a play time of 150 minutes, about managing schools for girls in Indonesia.

Girls from different islands come to your school to study. Your task is to help as many students as possible graduate while carefully managing your available duits—money—and books. Your school’s reputation also matters as you work toward educational success.

Graduation is only the beginning. As students complete their education, they become politicians, fighters, patrons, or teachers, further advancing education for women and supporting the fight for Indonesia’s freedom. After three rounds, the player with the highest number of points wins.

  • Manage schools for girls from different Indonesian islands.
  • Balance duits, books, and school reputation.
  • Help students graduate and take on influential roles.
  • Compete for the highest score after three rounds.

Kartini: From Darkness to Light is set in the late 1800s and early 1900s, during Indonesia’s struggle for independence from Dutch colonialism. It reflects an era when Indonesian women stepped into public life, led battles, participated in politics, and built schools to support the nation’s eventual liberation through education.

The game draws its name from a famous series of letters written by Kartini, a Javanese aristocrat, to her Dutch friends. Later published as From Darkness to Light, the letters are often credited as a cornerstone of the Indonesian women’s emancipation movement and served as an inspiration for the fight for independence.
