About this expansion
Karuba: The Volcano is a 2016 board game for 2–4 players, with a playing time of approximately 40 minutes. It introduces a volcano tile to each player’s island, changing how adventurers move through the jungle.
After the adventurers and temples have been placed, the youngest player begins. Each player then places their volcano on one of the 12 jungle fields in the interior of their island. A volcano cannot be placed on an edge field, and every player must choose a different field on their own island.
- Each player receives one volcano tile.
- Volcano placement takes place after the initial adventurer and temple placement.
- The youngest player places first, followed by the other players clockwise.
- Each player must use a different field on their island for the volcano.
Volcano tiles do not contain a path, so adventurers cannot access them. Their effect instead reaches the surrounding jungle: whenever an adventurer moves onto a tile that is horizontally or vertically next to a volcano, the move costs 2 movement points instead of 1.
Diagonal adjacency does not count. This makes the exact location of the volcano important, as nearby orthogonal tiles carry the increased movement cost while the volcano tile itself remains inaccessible to adventurers.
With its fixed placement rules and straightforward movement effect, Karuba: The Volcano adds a clearly defined terrain feature to every player’s island. The tile is placed individually by each player, and its position determines which neighboring jungle spaces require extra movement points.
