About this board game
Kintsugi is a peaceful tile-laying game for 2–3 players that takes about 15 minutes to play. Inspired by the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold lacquer, it combines artistic pattern building with secret deduction and deceptively simple scoring.
On your turn, play a card depicting pottery fragments onto the previously played card, connecting fragments together as you build a repaired piece of pottery. Try to connect your color of pottery into as few pieces as possible. The challenge is not only to create an efficient design, but also to keep your color hidden from the player judging your work.
Each player also takes the role of an art critic for their opponent. Your critic is the player to your right, and they must try to guess your color. If they identify it, they subtract your score from theirs at the end of the round, making every connection—and every clue—matter.
- Peaceful tile laying for 2–3 players
- Approximately 15 minutes of play time
- A secret-color deduction twist
- Scoring where the lowest total wins
You can win by being the better artist, the better critic, or both. Play one round per player, add the scores from each round, and aim for the lowest total. The minimalist design of Kintsugi makes each move feel focused, while the hidden information gives the calm pottery repair a subtle layer of tension.
With its blend of connection-building, concealed intentions, and critical observation, Kintsugi turns an elegant artistic idea into a compact contest of judgment. Repair the pottery carefully, disguise your color, and decide whether you can read your opponent better than they can read you.
