About this board game
La Garde Avance! is a two-player Waterloo game for a listed play time of 90 minutes, covering the French army’s last attack at battalion scale. Designed as an original module for the Jours de Gloire series, it was published in VaeVictis magazine #161.
The scenario places Napoleon’s last reserve at the center of the action. Six battalions of the Middle Guard and five battalions of the Old Guard advance in square formation, attempting to assault Wellington’s thin red line as it continues to hold its positions.
French pressure is only part of the challenge. On the French army’s right flank, Blücher’s forces are becoming an ever greater threat, adding urgency to this final push. The historical scenario lasts five turns, with each turn representing twenty minutes of real time.
- Setting: the last attack of the French army during the Battle of Waterloo
- Scale: 100 meters per hexagon
- Strength points: about 200 infantry, 150 cavalry, or 2 guns
- Scenario length: 5 turns of 20 minutes each
La Garde Avance! focuses on a concentrated historical moment rather than the entire battle. With the Guard moving forward in formation, Wellington holding the line, and Blücher’s forces threatening the flank, every part of the short scenario reflects the pressure surrounding Napoleon’s final reserve.
The designer describes a game as lasting around one hour, while the listed play time is 90 minutes. For players interested in the Jours de Gloire series and the closing moments of Waterloo, this module offers a compact battlefield study centered on the French Guard’s advance.
