About this board game
Leuthen: Frederick’s Greatest Victory 5 December, 1757 is a 1–2 player historical battle game playable in about 40 minutes. It is the first game in the Drums & Muskets series, which recreates 18th-century battles from the adoption of the socket bayonet through the French Revolution.
The Hohenzollern monarchy is in danger, and Prussia stands near collapse after a series of defeats. As winter approaches, Frederick commits his small army against an Austrian force nearly twice its size, with one desperate battle left to restore his fortunes before the snows arrive.
Designed by Frank Chadwick, Leuthen uses an elegant set of simple mechanics to bring the uncertainties of an Age of Reason battlefield to life. Players must contend with the interaction of command control, maneuver, morale, and combat as the battle unfolds.
- Scale: Each unit represents a division of 2,000 to 8,000 men.
- Map: Each space represents approximately one kilometer across.
- Turns: Each turn represents one hour of battle.
- Ratings: Complexity is 3.5 on a 9-point scale, while solitaire suitability is 5 on a 9-point scale.
Leuthen invites players to refight Frederick’s greatest victory through a focused system that connects battlefield decisions with uncertainty and morale. Whether played head-to-head or solo, it presents a tense historical contest shaped by Prussia’s desperate situation and Austria’s numerical advantage.
