About this board game

Lignum is a strategic optimization game for 2–4 players that takes about 120 minutes, placing you in charge of a 19th-century lumber mill. Starting with limited resources and workers, you must plan carefully to make your operation the most profitable.

Each round, players travel to a nearby forest, collecting tools and hiring workers along the way. After felling timber, you decide how to transport the wood to your sawmill, whether to process it or sell it immediately, and how to optimize the entire processing chain.

Competition is fierce, so successful management requires more than simply cutting trees. You will need to secure the best cutting areas, make use of limited contract workers, and continually update or replace your equipment. Your mill’s efficiency depends on making savvy investments while balancing several demands at once.

  • Manage limited resources and workers.
  • Secure cutting areas and gather tools.
  • Transport, process, or sell timber.
  • Upgrade and replace equipment.
  • Store enough firewood and food to survive harsh winters.

The second edition includes the Joinery & Buildings expansion. This addition introduces two extra locations along the supply path, giving players new ways to develop their operations.

Players can acquire special buildings that provide unique abilities for the rest of the game. They can also hire joiners to generate additional income each round; supplying those joiners with the appropriate wood can earn extra money at the end of the game.

With its interconnected decisions and demanding supply chain, Lignum challenges players to balance immediate income with long-term preparation, including the resources needed to endure winter.
