Living Forest: Kodama

About this expansion

Living Forest: Kodama is a 2023 board game for 1–4 players with an approximately 50-minute playing time. Play as one of four Spirits of Nature and use the Kodama’s help to protect the Sacred Tree from the increasingly dangerous Onibi.

This addition introduces the Call a Kodama action. You can use flowers from your Help Line, Forest, and victory tiles to buy one—and only one—Kodama card during each turn. The card joins your personal deck like a Guardian Animal card, providing useful items and a Kodama symbol.

At the start of your Action phase, count the Kodama symbols visible on your Help Line and in your Forest. Their total can provide valuable advantages:

• With 2 visible symbols, take a Fragment tile.
• With 3 visible symbols, take an Element tile.
• With 4 visible symbols, perform an additional basic Action during the turn.

Emptying a pile of Kodama cards also raises the corresponding victory condition from 13 to 15, giving you a way to slow your opponents. However, every Kodama purchase provokes Onibi: he advances on the Circle of Spirits, and each Spirit he passes requires a Fire tile of value 2 to be added to the circle’s center.

Living Forest: Kodama also expands your options with new Guardian Animals and protective Trees. Five Level 2 Guardian Animal cards let you perform the same basic Action twice, while five Level 3 cards provide a Bonus Action matching the type shown. Six new Kodama-related Tree types can be planted, with no more than one of each type.

A Solo mode is included, offering another way to face the growing threat to the Sacred Tree.
