About this board game
Lobositz: First Battle of the Seven Years War is a two-player historical battle game with a 360-minute play time, covering the October 1, 1756, clash between the Prussian and Austrian armies.
As the Seven Years War erupts, King Frederick II of Prussia invades Saxony and divides his army. While one part keeps the Saxon army contained at its fortified camp around Pirna, Frederick leads the rest into Bohemia to find the Austrian force gathering under Field Marshal Browne.
The armies meet near the town of Lobositz on the Elbe River. A ten-hour struggle unfolds across fog-masked fields, hills, and vineyards, with charges and counter-charges eventually giving way to a street fight among burning buildings. At darkness, the Austrians withdraw in good order and concede the field.
The battle was small by Seven Years War standards, but its consequences were important. The delay to the Austrian relief effort helped force the Saxon surrender at Pirna, while the Prussians discovered that their opponent was no longer the same old Austrian army and that a quick victory could not be expected.
As the fifth game in Clash of Arms Games’ Battles from the Age of Reason series, Lobositz: First Battle of the Seven Years War is presented as an excellent introduction to the series, using one map and a limited number of counters.
