About this board game
Lord of the Rings is a 2003 kids’ board game for 2–5 players that takes about 20 minutes to play. Players race from the Shire to Mount Doom, hoping to be the first hobbit to rid the world of the dark lord, Sauron.
The journey through Middle-earth includes some minor decision points. Along the way, hobbits encounter friends who can guide them and foes who can hinder their progress toward Mount Doom.
While the hobbits advance, the flying Nazgul are constantly trying to thwart their progress. This creates an ongoing source of interference as players work toward the end of the route.
- Race from the Shire to Mount Doom
- Play with 2–5 players in around 20 minutes
- Meet friends who guide hobbits and foes who delay them
- Face the interference of the flying Nazgul
The game also includes a slightly more advanced version using the Palantir. In this version, hobbits are discovered and delayed as they approach Mordor, adding another obstacle to the journey.
With its straightforward race, short playing time, and light decision-making, Lord of the Rings presents a compact way to follow the hobbits’ path across Middle-earth. This title should not be confused with The Lord of the Rings, the cooperative game with the same author.
