About this board game

Maps of Misterra is a strategic exploration and cartography game for 1–4 players, with play time of about 60 minutes. In this mystical island adventure, players explore an unknown land, pursue personal and hidden objectives, and work toward creating a correct map for maximum points.

At the start, a central board representing the island is placed on the table. Each player receives a personal map used to record discoveries, creating a direct connection between exploration on the central island and the map each player is building.

On every turn, players choose two actions. They can move their explorer pawn across the central board, discover new terrains close to their explorer by choosing from four randomly drawn tiles, or claim control of areas.

  • Move your explorer around the island.
  • Discover nearby terrain from a choice of four randomly drawn tiles.
  • Claim control of areas.
  • Transcribe discoveries onto your personal map.

The island’s terrain is not immediately certain. A type of terrain must be explored twice on the central island before it is validated, so unvalidated terrain types can change. What seemed to be grass may later prove to be something else, leaving your personal map out of step with the central board.

This shifting information creates the central challenge of Maps of Misterra. You must find the ideal balance between your own objectives and the goal of producing a correct cartography of the island. Explore carefully, adapt when discoveries change, and decide how to use your limited actions as the island gradually reveals its true nature.
