About this board game
Marquis is a card game for 2–4 players with an approximate play time of 45 minutes. Players compete to claim the title of Marquis by collecting coins, purchasing jewels, and building the most valuable jewel stock.
Every player has a set of 12 cards, each depicting a character they can impersonate. The available roles bring distinctive powers that can shift the fortunes of everyone at the table. Choosing when to use each character is central to gathering the money needed for precious jewels.
- The diamond dealer can buy diamonds twice.
- The pickpocket steals a coin from the richest player.
- The prosecutor, extortioner, and countess add to the intrigue surrounding the players’ jewels.
Coins are a means to an end: jewels must be purchased before they can contribute to victory. Players continually impersonate new characters while trying to gather enough money to buy diamonds and rubies at the best price. Meanwhile, special abilities can cause money to change hands and disrupt an opponent’s plans.
The game ends as soon as one player cannot play any character during their turn. Players then count their collected jewels, scoring one point for each diamond and five points for each ruby. The player with the highest score wins and earns the title of Marquis.
With its shifting roles, coin-taking abilities, and valuable jewel purchases, Marquis turns a race for wealth into a contest of timing and tactical impersonation. Choose your characters wisely, because fortunes can change hands relentlessly before the final jewel count.
